URGENT DELIVERY OF OXIMETER PROBES FROM NHS BASE TO PATIENTS’ HOMES

IMPORTANT NOTES

If you feel unwell or have been self-isolating due to someone being unwell at home, you must not participate.

If you have an underlying condition making you more vulnerable to the effects of Covid-19 you must not participate.

You also undertake not to disclose the addresses to which you deliver probes.

Finding the O2 probe base at the Royal Free Hospital:

Park in Ambulance Bay (by prior agreement via Clinical Director)

Enter the hospital from Pond Street on the lower ground floor (A&E entrance, not main hospital entrance).

There are two Royal Free Hospital A&E entry doors: use the one on the left.

Go straight ahead; the corridor bends and there’s a waiting room immediately on the left hand side “RFH A&E Green UCC reception“. This is a non-Covid-19 area.

If you are on overnight shift, the Telephone Coordinator will tell you the number of probes to collect, and the addresses to which they must be delivered.

If you are on a daytime job via Gophr, all the information you require will be in the job notes.

Take note of how many Oximeter probes are required, as this may be more than one.

The receptionist will provide access to the box of clean probes.

Sometimes the receptionists at the RFH are not well-briefed. Be firm, but polite about why you are there. The PPE is for you, not the patient.

Add date, time, number of probes, your name and signature to the sign-out sheet.

Sanitise your hands with gel provided at Reception before leaving A&E.
If you touched any handles before returning to your bike, use sanitiser again before putting on your biker gloves.

You will leave the base with:

PPE for the whole task (detailed use below)

A supply of clean probes in a container, each probe in a separate bag.

Note: Probes are quite fragile, keep them in a safe, dry place away from extreme heat or cold.

Note: Do not remove probes from their packaging.

Mobile reception in A&E is very poor, so sometimes the app does not see the job has started, so you won’t get the delivery address. Re-check your signal outside the hospital.

On arrival at a destination remove the correctly addressed probe(s).

Note: Some addresses may require more than one probe.

After removing your bike gloves, put on first your clean disposable gloves, then your mask, and deliver the probe in its bag to outside the front of the house (or wherever you have been advised to deposit it).

The household will be expecting the delivery. There is no need to ring their doorbell or knock. You should have no face to face contact with any member of the household.

Return to your bike. First remove your gloves, then your mask.

Place gloves and mask in the disposal bag provided, which must be kept closed and separated from the supply of clean probes and clean PPE.

Now sanitise your hands with alcohol gel before riding to your next delivery destination.

If you prefer, and your helmet can accommodate it, you may keep your mask on for the duration of your trip for all your deliveries.

Repeat this process at each delivery address until all clean probes have been delivered.

Ride home, sanitise your hands with gel outside your home. Go inside and wash your hands well with soap and water.

The disposal bag containing your used PPE must be left untouched and out of reach of children or animals, until you return to probe base next where you can dispose it.

Alternatively, you can leave the bag untouched for 72 hours then dispose of it in your regular rubbish bin.

Wash your hands with soap and water or sanitise using gel immediately after disposal.

And finally, thank you. …You may have saved a life today.
